The Hoosier state’s most famous living artist comes back home again to Indiana through the IMA’s first major exhibition of his original prints. The Essential Robert Indiana explores the stories behind many of the artist’s most iconic works for the first time, using material drawn from extensive interviews with the artist to uncover new meanings and complexities. This exhibition featured prints as well mixed media sculptures and ephemera designed by Robert Indiana from the IMA's collection. A series of photographs of Robert Indiana by the artist, William John Kennedy, were also included in order to help familiarize the visitor with a young Robert Indiana's lifestyle. Large, mural-sized, portraits of Robert Indiana were included throughout the galleries in order to emphasize the chronological display and biographic nature of his works.
